Group members working together to set up a telescope

Join Our Research Group

The Occultation Research Group welcomes students, researchers, and astronomy enthusiasts who are interested in contributing to cutting-edge scientific research. Whether you're a UVA student looking to get involved in undergraduate research, or an external collaborator interested in our work, there are many ways to participate.

For UVA Students

If you're a student at the University of Virginia and interested in joining our group:

  • Contact the Executive Team: For questions about our research or how to get involved, contact any member of the executive team, or our president Teddy Oakey, at rxr4nd@virginia.edu.
  • Attend Our Meetings: To find out when and where we hold our nightly observations, learn about upcoming opportunities, and join our Groupme, sign up for our listserv.
  • No Prior Experience Required: All training is provided for students by students. We'll teach you how to operate telescopes, analyze data, and contribute to astronomical publications.

For External Collaborators

We collaborate with amateur astronomers, professional observatories, and international research groups:

  • International Occultation Timing Association (IOTA): Visit IOTA to learn about occultation observations and join the global network of observers.
  • Coordinate Observations: If you're planning to observe an occultation event, contact us to coordinate observations and share data.
  • Data Sharing: We welcome collaboration on data analysis and publication. Reach out to discuss potential partnerships.
